Terror - Never Alone [Album Review & Music Video]

If Sick of it All is the hardcore scene’s version of Slayer and Hatebreed is the Metallica of hardcore, then Terror is most certainly the Lamb of God of hardcore. The style never really changes, but the fans love it and Terror is set to become the king of the scene one day. "The Damned, The Shamed" is everything that the fans have come to love about this band; it is heavy, fast, and has a sing-a-long in every song. The lyrics come from the heart, and that is what it should be all about.

You can tell that an album is going to be good when you start nodding along soon as the first song kicks off. "Voice of the Damned" is a perfect opening song for a Terror disc. The song has it all. But then out of nowhere comes a guitar solo, which is something new for the band and the hardcore scene in general. The next song, "Relentless Through and Through," picks up right where the last one ended. This song is one of the best of the album and it is sure to be a live favorite. Terror knows how to work a decent breakdown into their work, but few bands would be able to follow up a breakdown with a guitar solo (yes, another one!) and make it sound so smooth and flowing.

"Betrayer," the next song, is slower than the last two songs. Toward the end of the song it all slows down and vocalist Scott Vogel does a few lines of clean(ish) words. "Rise of the Poisoned Youth" picks up the speed again, as the song builds up into an explosion of pure anger and fury, typical of Terror. This song is also set to become a favorite. The song offers many chances for the hardcore masses to sing with Vogel and mosh to the music.

"Never Alone" is the longest track of the album, it is also the first of the disc to have a film clip to go with it. The lyrics of the song are almost uplifting at times. Lines like “When you're down reach for me, with all your strength and I won't let go, it’s you and me against this world, you've got to know that you're never alone” show that Terror is not some tough-guy band only interested in breakdowns, but a band that writes songs that actually mean something.

"What I Despise" keeps up the pace. At one stage it seems like another guitar solo is coming on, but it doesn’t happen. This song has definitely been written for the live show. The song consists of gang vocals, breakdowns and lyrics that are going to inspire countless mic grabs and stage dives.

The next song opens with a vocal solo that is all about living for yourself and no one else. "Let Me Sink" and the next song, "Feel the Pain," follow a similar pattern. Both songs start with a part focused only on the vocals. But instead of a breakdown, "Feel the Pain" focuses on guitar harmonics, which is a fresh change in the right direction. "Lost our Minds" is a great song, although it seems Terror doesn’t have it in them to write bad songs. This song is definitely a highlight of the album, however. It has it all - breakdowns, gang shouts, good lyrics, speed, and a guitar solo.

The next song, "March to Redemption" seems like it is going to be soft, as the instrumental start is fairly mellow and soft. But any fears that Terror has gone “soft” are smashed when the song gets into it, but the mellow instruments do return at several points in the song. The following song, "Crush What’s Weak," brings back the rage. But the song takes a little bit to get into, as it has a bit of an intro to start it. Many might not like the long intro, as hardcore gets straight to the point and isn’t about beating around the bush. Besides the start, "Crush What's Weak" it is a great song though.

"Still Believe" shows that Vogel has been influenced by hip hop during his career. The lyrics are catchy and all rhyme, which again sets Terror apart from the over-crowded hardcore scene. What a closer for an album, "Suffer to Return Harder" is a perfect hardcore song. This song is pretty much a “fuck you” to anyone who has doubted Vogel. Although the song is no different to the rest of the album, it is still a great closer.

Terror is a band to watch. While they don’t really break any boundaries or try to change the scene they still write songs that are far better than many bands in the scene.

Death Before Dishonor - Break Through It All [Music Video]

Death Before Dishonor’s humble beginnings started to rise with the release of Friends Family Forever, a seven song EP and their first release on Bridge Nine Records. Soon after, they supported it with non-stop international touring with Agnostic Front, Champion, Full Blown Chaos, and Terror. Making believers one show at a time, DBD logged almost a year and a half straight on the road before Bridge Nine was forced to release an expanded edition of Friends Family Forever as a full-length just so the band could have something new to sell.

In 2007, the release of Count Me In established Death Before Dishonor on a whole new level. Their penchant for diverse songwriting in a genre often pegged for repetition, Count Me In was praised-often by press who admittedly didn’t expect it, with Punknews saying “it’s impossible to not get caught up in their level of intensity.” If that wasn’t enough, by debuting on Billboard’s Heatseekers, Independent Albums & Top New Artists charts and staying there for four weeks, DBD proved that the kids are listening. Their video for “Break Through It All” was in rotation on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball for over three months, and yet, people were still passing by Death Before Dishonor. DBD headlined tours nationwide and ended 2007 on the coveted Persistence Tour in Europe-headlined by Hatebreed, Agnostic Front & Ignite, and they haven’t stopped.

2008 has shown DBD supporting Count Me In all over the world including Australia, Europe, Great Britain, Mexico and Canada as well as the United States. This year proves to be the busiest for DBD and they show no sign of stopping anytime soon.

Hatebreed - In Ashes They Shall Reap [Album Review & Music Video]

Why a self-titled album? Perhaps Hatebreed felt this year’s To The Lions covers album had separated them from their main objective. Perhaps, as this is the first original album to feature their newcomer guitarist Wayne Lozinak, they decided they are the whole new breed of hate! Perhaps it’s that they’ve been changing their sound, something that vocalist Jamey Jasta recently mentioned: “We added a few brutal new ingredients and we’re more than amped on the results.” Take your pick.

The production is, as always, simply brutal. With Zeuss again at the helm, producing, engineering and mixing the thing, it’s a bass-loaded monster that will shake your cabs apart. The vocals and guitars sit cosseted within this hammering comfort zone but are not exactly smothered. With the occasional wild solo (yes, solos) there is plenty there to worry the tweeters aswell. Occasionally, the mixing effects go overboard and become a little intrusive, by splitting verses into cloaked and uncloaked or by providing an crackling phased intro (Pollution To The Soul) or exit to a track with a sudden sonic meltdown (Not My Master). However, if there’s one album that you need to demonstrate the capabilities of your sound system, it’s THIS Hatebreed album.

Within all this, the music is solid Hatebreed doing exactly what Hatebreed do best. Jasta’s as pissed off as ever, belching out his anger in one continuous, monosyllabic assault on your lugholes. Yelping “you fucking bleed now” as he introduces the killer Everyone Bleeds Now, screaming the oddly eloquent lines “into oceans of hurt, over mountains of grief” during Through The Thorns and roars “we were destined to fuck, you know how hard to touch” during the unhinged As Damaged As Me.

And yet there’s those added “brutal ingredients” popping up every now and again. The breakdowns are suddenly a huge feature of the overall structure, at times, slipping back through the gears to an almost neanderthal pace. It’s something that Jasta has spoken about: “The speed is there, which we even kicked up a few notches on some of the songs, but the groove and slower tempos are represented.” It’s as if their sound has developed from being an obnoxious teenage rowdy into a thirty-something beefcake jock with a penchant for violence. And then there’s whole tracks that become part of the makeover - Every Lasting Scar dredges up a chugged riff, throws in gang vocals to accompany Jasta’s harmonising chorus hook, and sinfully simplifies the structure and drumbeats to create a chunk of sickly, radio-friendly rock; Undiminished proves to be a sombre melodic, instrumental breather (with a twinkling piano exit to boot) requiring a liner-note pep talk from Jasta to ram home the point it’s trying to make.

Having blown us to pieces with the utter intensity of their last piece of original songwriting, Supremacy, Hatebreed have opened their minds a fraction, let their defences drop, and allowed just a little of the outside world in. With this album they have clearly reciprocated and put a little bit more of themselves into it and that shouldn’t be a bad thing now, should it?

The band’s debut video for “In Ashes They Shall Reap” debuted a few weeks ago on Headbangers Ball and has since been added into regular MTV2 rotation, a first in HATEBREED’s 14-year career.

A Day To Remember - I'm Made Of Wax Larry, What Are You Made Of? [Album Review & Music Video]

Homesick makes it abundantly clear why so many people refuse to jump sides for A Day to Remember. There are 12 songs of the exact same heavy/lol-pop that can be heard on For Those Who Have Heart or And Their Name Was Treason. Stick with your instincts; there are no true changes to the band’s sound. However, I finally realized the (probably intentional) trickery that comes packaged with ADTR records. Each one begins with a blistering fist pumper that’s more pop than “mosh.” The listener is instantly “amped” up (or whatever), and then it’s almost like the remaining 35 minutes don’t even matter. Your sated pleasure sensors easily discharge the forthcoming filler. But let’s say you skip that first song - or in this case, the first and second song - do you still have a great record? Quite confidently, I will say without this carefully planned dose of adrenaline you have a terrible f**king record. After we hear a shattering breakdown proclaiming “This is a battleground!” in second song “My Life For Hire,” the album becomes pretty skippable - save for a few (admittedly contagious) moments. If any band should just release EP’s, it’s A Day to Remember.

Trust me when I say Homesick can feel like a day lost. It becomes excessively tiring to hear what sounds like the same song - save for slightly different choruses - over and over. Maybe for a record (or even two!) this could be satisfactory. But other than doing away with the slightly creepy/sappy vibe of For Those Who Have Heart, this is essentially the same record. I won’t lie: at first, I was content. I even posted in the forums that I thought this was ADTR’s best record. Turns out I was on iTunes Shuffle and a song from FTWHH was playing. Oops. My bad.

This is multiplayer music, so perhaps my crippling social failures make me a bad judge of Homesick. Unless you're surrounded by bros and brews (i.e. XsodaX), prepare to feel like a fool when ADTR start gang-chanting, “This is the life we chose / This is the life I lead / They can never take this from me!” But hey!, there’s some double bass and some uplifting lyrics and hey! the song is called “NJ Legion Iced Tea” so it’s about foolin' haters and crap! (You’re a cynical dick - Editor.)

Whether you believe it or not, I’m an optimist. I hear hope in “Have Faith in Me.” The song is very light on the screaming and very focused on the catchy chorus. True, it’s one of the simpler songs on Homesick, but at least it sounds a teensy bit different. The song is cheesy in an endearing way (“I said I’d never let you go / And I never did”). Its gang chorus accents rather than overtakes, and we leave “amped” (or whatever) in a completely different way. Sadly, the song precedes “Welcome to the Family” (featuring Vincent Bennett of The Acacia Strain), which comes across as a weak appeasement to those who were hoping for the fierceness of FTWHH.

As is their custom, ADTR have included a mostly acoustic opportunity for vocalist Jeremy McKinnon. Is he auditioning for a solo spot on Tooth & Nail? His nasally, vocally-stretched performance sounds almost too fake to handle. The “La La La’s” are so overly “mouthed” (that’s a term, right?) that you’ll need to scrub the lame off you for hours. “If It Means A Lot To You” also features a duet with Sierra Kusterbeck of VersaEmerge before eventually erupting into a gang chorus of “La La’s”, but these additions do very little to save the track.

An impressive opener like “The Downfall Of Us All” can't hide Homesick's disappointing truth. There’s barely enough songs for a self-made EP, and as a full length it borders on torturous redundancy. McKinnon sounds improved most of the time, but it’s hard to critique any improvements for the other musicians due to the album’s “been there” feel. Never taking any steps forward has finally crippled A Day to Remember, and a continued fear of the unknown will surely kill them.

Donnybrook - Whats A Little Blood [Music Video]

Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, Donnybrook brings an old-school, in-your-face style that has drawn comparisons to Madball, Death Threat, and District 9. Rising from the ashes of Hurricanrana, the group was formed in early 2003 by six friends who were fed up with the insincerity plaguing the scene they grew up loving and believing in. With their debut four-song EP out now on 1917 Records, coupled that with their plans to tour both the East and West coasts (and soon after, the world!), and you'll see why Donnybrook is poised to thrust themselves into the mix with hardcore's heaviest hitters.

In the end, there is only one possible conclusion you can reach after listening to Donnybrook: This is a hardcore band, made up of hardcore kids, playing for the love of the hardcore scene.

Tears Of Blood - Kings Will Be Kings [Music Video]

Tears Of Blood was formed in April 2002 in Oberhausen/Germany by Marcel Kremer and Marcel Brozeit.(Former members of "Indication" www.theageofvenusrecords.com). Sixth month later they already recorded the three track demo Death shall rise. It was produced by Klaus Spangenberger who is also the lead singer of the death metal band Blood red angel from Krefeld/Germany. This demo was very well respected by fans and critics. It was presented at several concerts and the crowd was almost blown away by this powerful music. After this exciting and also exhausting time Tears Of Blood decided that it was time for a creative pause. Due to personal matters some members left the band. May 2004 the new line up was formed and the first gigs were played.Tears Of Blood shared the stage withe some fine bands like Cataract, Mnemic, End Of Days, Personal Vendetta etc.....It was clear that the next release has to be something special, so Tears Of Blood decided to enter the famous "Midas Studios" in Belgium (www.midasstudios.com) in April 2005. A lot of the legendary H-8000 bands recorded their records in this studio.( Liar,Deformity,Congress,Vitality and tons of other bands). The result is a four track cd,where you can find all the mixtures of the Tears Of Blood sound. A big special on this cd is, that Joost Noyelle - aka Josh Congress (www.congresshc.be) does some lead vocals and plays a very great guitar solo. This fact puts the cd just one step higher. Only one week later, the band filmed their music video for the song "Kings will be Kings". This video is a special bonus upon the cd. Oliver Pannke, who is the owner of aberrado records and the online shop one-sharp-knife (www.aberrado-records.de/www.one-sharp-knife.com) gave Tears Of Blood the chance, to get out this cd, and signed the band for his label. Tears Of Blood are ready to hit the stages again. So the story will go on, keep your eyes open!!!

Freya - Suffer Not One [Album Review & Music Video]

Alternative Press stated in their February 2007 review that Freya’s new album Lift The Curse is music that can start prison riots. The album received four out of five stars in Revolver and a solid eight out of ten in Decibel and Outburn magazines. Holland’s Lords Of Metal webzine says that these songs will become classics in years to come. Both critics and fans in the worldwide mainstream/underground metal and hardcore scenes agree that Lift The Curse is one of the most powerful and captivating releases of the year. This is a must have CD for fans of Hatebreed, Slayer, and the bands previous endeavor the legendary Earth Crisis. Freya delivers the same dosage of ultra-aggressive metallic hardcore as they did with their former band sans the technical approach. Frontman Karl said in the Rhode Island based Final Word fanzine, “We set out to streamline our sound on this one. This keeps things fresh for us after years of experimenting during EC.” Music Choice, XM, and Sirius radios along with terrestrial radio have had the bands infectiously heavy track Suffer Not One in rotation for months. The album Lift The Curse debuted as the second most added album on college metal radio. Onstage, Freya is a furious storm of energy that marshals the crowd to vent aggression through stage dives and circle pits. They have played to receptive audiences with different bands across the board from Nonpoint and Madball to Crowbar and Kataklysm. Freya recently returned from tour dates with Sworn Enemy and Too Pure To Die in support of their newest release. Drummer Ethan Henry says, “We want to keep the spirit of 80’s thrash alive. The shows were crazy. Testament, Nuclear Assault, and DRI had something positive to say.” In 2003, Freya released As The Last Light Drains, that album is a blend of melody and devastatingly crushing heaviness. They were interviewed on Headbangers Ball and their video to the title track was in rotation for months. On the follow up to Last Light, Freya returned with a split recording with Victory Records label mates The Hoods in 2004. Peta2 made a video for the anti vivisection anthem from that release entitled Struggle To Survive, it is featured on Peta2’s Save 99 DVD compilation. Freya appeared along with Lamb Of God, Shadows Fall, Goldfinger, and Fall Out Boy. Over 100,000 copies of that DVD were taken home by fans who attended The Sounds Of The Underground and Warped Tour. The split prepared fans for the sonic fury that is Lift The Curse. Singer Karl Buechner describes the album as a concept from start to finish. “Lyrically it traces a timeline from Eden to Armageddon. With as many weapons, there are in the world and the amount of hatred some people have for their fellow man, civilization is going to self-destruct. Until then, Freya is determined to thrive with the long running band nucleus of Karl Buechner, Erick Edwards, and Ethan Henry along with new recruits Mike LaGrow and Mark Salisbury. Look out for upcoming US tour dates and a new video for the track Suffer Not One this summer.

Bad Religion - Los Angeles Burning [Music Video]

Bad Religion a Punk Rock Band GROWING up in West Hills, Brett Gurewitz learned that Los Angeles was a more unruly beast than the far-off cities he read about in schoolbooks. "The telling thing about L.A. is the fact that it has a fire season. I'm a third-generation Angeleno, and proud of it, and if you grow up here you learn that fire is a cyclical thing. To me, it meant L.A. wasn't quite tamed. Other cities, like New York and Paris, are settled and established — they long ago became docile, tamed things. Not Los Angeles."
Myspace
Gurewitz plays guitar in Bad Religion and writes many of its songs, which long ago established it as the most high-minded band among L.A.'s pioneer punks. In the fire season of 2004, Gurewitz watched the blazes on TV and in the vacuous news chatter he heard themes that would become the song "Los Angeles Is Burning."

Comeback Kid is a hardcore punk band from Winnipeg, Canada. Their name comes from a headline in a newspaper about hockey player, Mario Lemieux coming back to the NHL. The band was formed in 2002 by Andrew Neufeld and Jeremy Hiebert who were both members of the band Figure Four. They were joined by their friends Scott Wade and Kyle Profetta, but CBK was originally intended only to be a side project. Their initial popularity was mainly due to word of mouth within the metalcore/hardcore scene.

Madball - Infiltrate The System [Album Review & Music Video]

Does it really make sense writing a review about Madball? This band has been a cult object since its inception in the late Eighties, and sometimes it’s sweet history gets more media attention than their admittedly very strong old school hardcore. As everybody knows, little Freddy Cricien used to jump on stage during Agnostic Front shows, as Roger Miret had to take care of his half-brother some way or another. Only in his early teenage years, Freddy formed his band Madball and started releasing EPs, later also CDs. The band’s been around now for almost twenty years, little Freddy is not even a twen anymore, but Madball still rock like in the good old days. You get uncompromising NYHC the way that only Sick Of It All are able to play these days. Madball are fast, angry and always straight in your face. They don’t need the metalcore hype of the 21st century, their clocks must have stopped sometime in the mid-Eighties. Madball are sincere, I guess, and I also guess this is the only thing they can play, but they do it with conviction, and that’s something everybody will notice when listening to the band’s sixth full-length album Infiltrate The System. There is nothing subtle about this good half hour of music, and you’d be disappointed if it sounded otherwise. If you liked Madball before, you will still want to get this CD. In that way, they are a bit like AC/DC or Motörhead who also never dare to try something new. But they are forgiven.
